Artist from Haiti - Roger Francois
Roger Francois was born in Petite Riviere, Haiti in October 1928. He started out as a wood sculptor but by the early sixties he added painting as a means of artistic expression, continuing to carve occasionally for many years. His rich and varied canvases most often portraying Haitian women are reminiscent of his early work in sculpture. read more
His subjects, women, animals, owls, market women and his "sun and moon faces" are bold, intensely colored, and dramatic. He also painted voodoo scenes with surreal overtones.
He had known international acclaim; the Brussels Museum has had a permanent exhibition since 1963 and his paintings have also been shown in the United States, France and Germany. Roger Francois died in 2013
