Artist from Haiti - Joel Gauthier
Gauthier is one of the more contemporary of the Haitian artists. He was born in Mireille, Haiti in 1955. He started painting at the age of 16 and his talent was instantly recognized.
At the age of 21 he was influenced by the works of Rousseau. Inspired, he developed his own menagerie of jungle animals that have become his hallmark. His jungle scenes are rich in depth and color and have been often imitated. They are widely used in publications about Haitian art. His paintings can be seen at the Haitian Institute in Washington D.C.
