Comments from Claude Dambreville, the well-known Haitian Painter :

“The invention of the drawing would be due to the daughter of the Greek Dibutade who, one evening, traced on a wall the profile of the young man she loved. The first drawing would have been a portrait. Should we add faith to this ancient legend, more poetic than probable? In any event, the portrait has always been the way to judge what an artist really is worth. It should be noted that, for the general public, the only question that arises for a portrait is: "is it or is it not resembling"? Alas, that's not enough. A portrait must resemble, not only superficially, but in depth, and be able to reveal more or less the personality of the model. I take this opportunity to pay tribute to my colleague, the late Luce Turnier, who studied fine arts in France. This talented artist could, after a few and very sober brushstrokes, let the soul of her subjects transpire. Doing my best to follow the footsteps of the genial Luce, I believe that my portraits, executed with simplicity and correctness, most often manage to present my models with a fairly satisfactory truth".
