Francoise immigrated to the United States in 1965. Inspired by her passion for color, Francoise uses her impressionistic style and Caribbean background to create a vibrant collection of original oil paintings. Bright reds, turquoises and blues come together in textured portrayal of women wearing colorful masks, showcasing colors inspired by her life in Haiti before she moved to the states at the age of ten.Her art is inspired by her childhood memories of her early life in Haiti.
Now a seven-year local of St. Augustine Florida, our nation’s oldest city, Francoise expresses her creativity through painting while taking in the sights at her job on the scenic cruise boat tour. Working in a natural setting was also a key inspiration that allowed her to view local tropical native birds daily, she explained. To get even more detailed, Francoise works with her photographer husband to capture local species though his lens to reproduce in her paintings. “We work together as a team,” she said. Though she holds degree in fine arts from Michigan State, Francoise began painting in high school, where she fell in love with impressionism. “I love the impressionists because they would use pure color, verses the old masters that layered their colors and did glazing”. Inspiration from Monet and Gauguin flows through her thick, textured brush strokes and bright hues that are apparent in her pieces. “The fun part about art is that there are no rights and wrongs...art is your expression, it is your creation and you are expressing yourself – you’re creating a canvas based on your view of whatever you want to create.”
After taking a brief hiatus to raise her family, Francoise is now back to her first love. “I discovered that when I tried painting again it was like riding a bike. You can go years without touching a brush, but whenever you get back into it, its there because it’s inside you,” she said. Francoise now works on five to ten paintings at a time and has a variety of future series in the works. “Right now I am working on a series of Caribbean dancers,” she said. “I love to work on a variety of subjects. It keeps me challenged.”
