Antonio Joseph, the child of Haitian parents, was born in the Dominican Republic and spent his childhood there. While there he studied music, as well as his regular studies. In 1944 he joined the Centre d'Art, studying watercolor under Dewitt Peters. He became a member of the Art Center's Administrative Council. He continued to support himself as a tailor while developing his own artistic style, studying under Jason Seley. He worked with artist Pierre Bourdelle painting a mural for the Port-au-Prince bicentennial. In 1952, with the help of the Centre d'Art he was able to give up his tailor shop and devote himself to his art.
He studied the technique of painting with casein paint - a watercolor paint made with milk solids - with American artist Paul keen, receiving two Guggenheim Foundation awards in the process. He traveled to the US and throughout Europe with Dewitt Peters in 1963. For the next 6 years he traveled often to the US to seriograph with Franck Jacobson.
In 1972 he joined the administrative council of the Museum of Haitian Art at St. Pierre's College. He also began teaching drawing and serigraphy at the Centre d'Art. His work has been exhibited extensively and he is considered one of Haiti's finest artists.
