Raoul Gilles was born Raoul Jules. His education began at the Don Bosco Primary School in Petion-Ville, and continued at the Lycee’ of Petion-Ville and College Senghor. In 1970, he began to draw and use watercolors.read more
He entered many exhibits in Haiti, winning second place at Fondev at the art museum of College St Pierre in 1978. He then participated in Connaitre les Jeunes Peintre II at the French Institute of Porst-au-Prince in 1982. He has won many other awards.
Gilles moved to the US in 1985, where he continued his education while exhibiting his paintings. In 1987 he entered the traveling exhibition of Haitian art (a cross section African-American and Caribbean fine arts) sponsored by Queens College (CUNY), Manhattan Borough Community College, and the College of New Rochelle. Again in 2005 Raoul Gilles enrolled and graduated from the Art Instruction school, where he studied by correspondence in Minnesota, Minneapolis. His work is also in many private collections in Haiti, Dominican Republic, United States, Germany, France, and Switzerland.
Raoul Gilles style is both primitive and modern.
