Rene Exume was born in 1929 in Petionville. Educated at Lycee Alexander Petion, he joined the Centre'd'Art in 1948. He was a founding member of the breakaway group that left the Centre'd'Art in 1950 to establish the Foyer des Artes Plastiques. There he continued in a leadership position and instructed children in painting and drawing techniques until the gallery closed in the late 1980's.
