Though Mario Calixte respects traditional art, he embraces modernity. His style challenges the viewer to see Haitian art not as just a primitive style, but one in which a community of Haitian artists combine tradition, sophistication and academic training to produce works in many styles. Over the years Mario has succeeded in sharing his artwork with the public; a demanding public in a country where socio-economic and political problems can be complicated by the day.
Mario Calixte has exhibited at the Musee National Pantheon (MUPANAH) in 2000. He ranked among the 10 best painters in the exhibition organized by FAO, the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Agriculture. He was laureate of Young Painters Competition Haitiens organized by the Diplomatic Academy and National Consular in 2003. His work has been displayed in Haiti's "Mairie" of Petion-ville, participating in the 2nd International Art Workshop with twenty artists from around the world such as: Mountassir Chemao, Patricia Goodrich, Patrick Cauvin, Riboul Montfleuri etc ... He was Artistic Director of the short film "Love Me Haiti", which was nominated at the 67th Cannes Film Festival 2014 and several other international recognitions. He was one of the exhibiting artists at Gutman Library at Harvard University and at the Cambridge Public Library in celebration of the "day Creole" in 2014. He also exhibited at the Payne Gallery, Morovian College in Bethlehem PA, for the "Meli Melo Art of Haiti”.
Mario teaches the children in Port-Au-Prince's destitute neighborhoods the fundamental of arts, guiding them towards a positive future and away from the circle of violence.
