Born in Pinar del Rio, Cuba
Artist's Statement: My work makes a poetic, and sometimes critical, journey about people I knew at sometime in my life, directly or by reference. This includes my family, friends, friends of my friends, legendary and not so legendary characters. We all go through life and leave a story, whether good or bad, but at the end is an experience that always leaves a lesson for someone. read more
Arist's Bio: As a child Rao’s grandfather used to tell him fantastic stories of magical happenings that involved solitary nights and enchanted landscapes. The creativity of these stories and the magic and colors of the tropics have remained with him forever.
Rao used whatever was around him to create images and crafts to play with. Art became his great passion and he credits this early creativity with helping him to develop his talents. He studied the masters - Picasso, Chagall, Klimt, Van Gogh, Klee, Kandinsky, Portocarrero and others to refine his gift. He consider himself a self-taught.
Rao went to the Higher Pedagogical Institute of Pinar del Rio, where he obtained a bachelor degree in Education. He taught Visual Art Appreciation and worked as a cultural promoter for art galleries and cultural institutions. He has participated in many collective exhibits in his country and abroad and has had several solo exhibits. He has won numerous art contests in his region. His art is in public institutions in Cuba and private collections in Cuba, Europe and North America.
Now he is living in Florida where he continues to create compositions rich in fantastic figures and elements; narratives based on stories about places, popular characters, mythical happenings and folk legends.
