Fernand Pierre

(1919 - 2002)
Born in Port-au-Pirince, Haiti

Fernand Pierre worked as a woodcutter, making little dogs as souvenirs, before he began to paint in 1948.

The gingerbread Victorian houses in the old residential sections of Port-au-Prince became a favorite subject for many of his paintings.

His work attracted the eye and interest of Dr. Walter E. Neiswanger, who made his first purchase of Haitian art from Pierre. Dr. Neiswanger was instrumental in starting the now historic collection of Haitian Art at the Davenport Art Gallery. The Davenport Art Gallery was the first public art museum in the United States to establish a permanent collection of Haitian Art.

Fernand Pierre died in June, 2002
