Fritz Merise

(1946 - )
Born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti

Merise's father was a farmer at La Gonave and his mother a businesswoman. He started to paint while he was in high school.

He sold his first painting in 1961. Merise paints landscapes, tap taps, and jungles in bright vivid colors. The animal compositions, brimming with lions, tigers, and all kinds of animals are often filled with humor. His most famous work, "Arc of Noa," was so successful that it appeared on a German postcard that sold 50,000 copies.

His paintings are from the Naif school and are well controlled and very detailed. He didn't have any formal art training and he considers himself a self-taught artist. Merise works very carefully so that it takes a long time to finish each canvas. His work reflects his joy of life.

Merise lives with his family in Port-au-Prince. His second daughter is studying to be a painter.

He has exhibited in Japan, Europe, the U. S. and the Caribbean.
