Daniel Louis' father made metal frames, his mother was a dressmaker. He had little education.
He joined the navy, where he remained for 3 years. He started to paint at the age of 25, without any training other than some advise from his brother and a friend. He went to the galleries, the museums, all the places where he could see good Haitian paintings.
He paints primarily naive jungles. He took part in collective exhibits in France, in California and in Miami. A hospital in Jamaica is decorated with large canvases of his work.
Daniel Louis lives in an apartment in Port-au-Prince with his five children and his aging parents. He paints in a workshop that he shares with a friend, so that he can concentrate on his work.
