Born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti
Mr. Valcin was born to an extremely poor family. He left school without finishing to become a tile setter. He started to paint in 1951. In 1959 he met Dewitt Peters when he exhibited a sample of his work at the Centre de Art . Mr. Peters encouraged him to devote all of his energies to his art. Most of his paintings consist of Vaudou scenes or depictions of country life. He is a very religious man and he attributes his success to his strong belief in the Loas. His work has been exhibited throughout Europe and the United States, and is in permanent collections in museums all over the world.
