Alexandre Gregoire
(1922 - 2001)
Born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti
Gregoire was born in Port-au-Prince in 1922. He served in the army and later was a musician in the Palace Band. In 1966, famed Haitian artist, Gérard Valcin introduced him at the Centre d'Art.
Gregoire paints in the "naive" style of Haitian art. His figures are created with simple lines and bold colors. Many of the houses he paints are box like. He only distinguishes male from female by the use of hairstyle or clothing. Some of his more common themes are village scenes, festivals, dancing, musicians, parties and other celebrations. All his works exude happiness and a child-like innocence.
Alexandre Gregoire has participated in many Haitian primitive art exhibitions in international museums.
