Roger Francois

(1928 - )
Born in Petite-Rivere de l'Artibonite, Haiti

Roger Francois was born in Petite Riviere, Haiti in October 1928. He started out as a wood sculptor and still carves occasionally. By the early sixties, he added painting as a means of artistic expression.

His rich and varied canvases most often portraying Haitian women are reminiscent of his early work in sculpture. His subjects, women, animals, owls, market women and his "sun and moon faces" are bold, intensely colored, and dramatic. He also paints voodoo scenes with surreal overtones.

He has known international acclaim; the Brussels Museum has had a permanent exhibition since 1963 and his paintings have also been shown in the United States, France and Germany. Within the last several years collectors who see his versatility and elegance of style as promise of greatness have recognized him.
