Jean-Bernard Etienne

Jean-Bernard Etienne was born in 1952 at Gonaives, Haiti. He acquired a passion for painting at a very early age. When you see his works it is difficult to believe that he has never taken any lessons. His paintings are generally young girls with enormous brown eyes and wonderfully expressive faces. He paints in the expressionist style and his natural abilities shine through in each of his works.

Known for his dramatic portraits of young women and children, Etienne imbues his faces with innocence and serenity. He surrounds the child with flowers and brilliant color. The most startling feature is the eyes. Etienne avoids sentimentality by giving his faces eyes that look deep into you, inviting you to look back.
