Bourmond Byron

(1923-2004)
Born in Jacmel

 

Bourmond Byron lived between Jacmel and Les Cayes. He studied at Freres de l'instruction Chretienne. He became a carpenter and worked as a ship builder. A visit at Centre d'Art in 1948 inspired him to become an artist. In 1955 he joined the Centre d'Art as an established artist.

He is an avid follower of voodoo and often chooses to paint ceremonial scenes in addition to scenes of Haitian daily life. He is known for using a semi-mystical treatment of light and his unique color pallette of subdued blues, greens and reds.

He has held exhibitions in France, Canada and the USA. His works are included in the permanent collections of the Musee d'Art Haitien du College Saint Pierre in Port-au-Prince, the Milwaukee Museum of Art, and the Waterloo Museum of Art in Iowa.
