Rodrigues Lessa

(1972 - )
Born in Tupa, State of Sao Paulo, Brazil

LessaRodrigues visited Bahia and he was impressed with the scenes and colors that he saw. He started to paint without any pretense, like a will he couldn’t dominate.  At that time, he received the support of a friend and Theater Director, Antonio Marcos de Campos, who later was nominated as the Culture Secretary of Avare.

Beginning of year 2000, the artist and restorer, Nilva Leda Calixto, (responsible for the artistic restoration of Teatro Municipal de Sao Paulo and official restoration of the patrimony of the Monastery of Sao Bento - São Paulo) hired him to help with the work.

He is a professional photographer, linked to BONANSSA’s group.

Since the beginning he has been following a style that he calls primitivism, never having taken painting course, not even a lesson.
He started with dense, dramatic, religious subjects, he tried abstract expressionism, which he enjoyed. He believes, however, that Naïf figurative is his strength. He portrays simple people, thus, the workers, the farmers, the laundrywomen, are constant in his canvases.

Rodrigues was born with the name of Adilson Rodrigues Coelho, however, he signs his pictures "Rodrigues Lessa".
