Patrice Piard was born in the south of Haiti in June 1947. With a Bachelor in Architectural Design from the Faculty Richard Leconte in Haiti, most of his paintings reflect his knowledge of architecture and building design. Patrice continues to epitomize inventiveness in balance with discipline.
Because he paints what he feels, his mood may find expression in human form or it may seek the style of abstraction, or it may be immersed in impressionists. But in every painting, there is the powerful instinct for composition and color.
He says he paints "a window through which his viewers may see his beloved homeland...Real Haiti! I would like them to see what I see."
In addition to painting, Patrice is one of the authors of "Haitian Artists in America," a great book featured on this site.
He currently resides in New York.
Comments Made About The Artist
¨Patrice Piard displays an ability
to paint nocturnes, which adds mystery to what should
be ordinary.¨
The New York Times Sunday August 10, 1997
¨Patrice Piard is in the best tradition of the
Haitian art: powerful and presumptuous harmony of colors,
poetry of shapes realistic and decorative at the same
time; individual movement structured from the line
of the color and the light, possess on its own the
composition and engenders an indisputable unity of
togetherness.¨
Michel Philippe Lerebours Historian of Art,
Port-au-Prince, Haiti
¨Patrice Piard's painting is a unique form of
realism. He uses his passionate seeking of colors'
composition to bring out reality.¨

Statement
"I would like a poetic quality
in my paintings. If I give too much information, the
painting becomes a dead-end description of a certain
place. I love its poetry. This idea is to give a sense
of peace and beauty by using relationship that have a
purpose. I try to combine the calculated classical approach
with romantic color. While I am looking for an artistic
solution it demands a new approach not to one but to
three of the major issues of painting, forms, color,
and figurative expression. For me each canvas is a personal
celebration of color, a passion which combines with peacefulness,
an ambiance of harmony."
